GPAC System used at the San Diego Mardi Gras Print E-mail
Monday, 11 February 2008

Every year on Fat Tuesday, the Gas Lamp Quarter in San Diego turns into a miniature French Quarter, featuring spectacular parades and stages with entertainment. Live jazz and blues spill out of the clubs and into the streets, where party-goers dance the night away. As attendance ranges from 25 – 45,000 party goers, the city cordons off several blocks.

Mardi Gras festival

Note: Mardi Gras, the French phrase translates to “Fat Tuesday”. It is a Christian festival that precedes Lent.

Coordinating security for such an event can be difficult and costly. San Diego local and Federal law enforcement officials overcame their security and control issues by connecting a GPAC System® to several disparate CCTV systems which were deployed along the main avenue for the festivities.

The camera feeds were input into GPAC System® enabling various agency officials and local and federal law enforcement to remotely log on or temporarily “subscribe” to specific cameras to view all footage.

This allowed law enforcement officials to appropriately dispatch officers on the ground, coordinate activity and assist in crowd control and clearing the area post event.

The use of GPAC System® enabled immediate “subscription” to any camera on the network, without creating an impact on the source camera feeds, allowing for uninterrupted viewing and operation at the Command Centre.
