The Department of Environment and Conservation gets tough with new Enforcement and Prosecution Policy using mobile surveillance. Demonstrating their commitment to innovation, and improved environmental monitoring in WA, management at the Western Australian DEC collaborated with ETCorp Pty Ltd to install the GPAC System into their mobile Pollution Response vehicles.
Use of Internet based technology in this field is a first in Australia, and the initiative has been recognized nationally as a ground breaking step, advancing environmental monitoring practices well into the 21st century. The systems were retrofitted to EPA patrol vehicles by Communications Australia, a leading WA provider of communications technology and services to Federal, State and Local Government Agencies. The department had a requirement to improve their response times, communications, enforce compliance and prosecute offenders. They came to ETCorp Pty Ltd who provided a complete suite of situational awareness products to achieve this. The first of these has been deployed in their Pollution Response vehicle to offer real time video footage, sensor integration and data logs which can be accessed from any web browser. The system had to integrate many sensors from various manufacturers, and allow them to be reconfigured remotely. EPA Head Office has access to this live in-vehicle sensor data and video footage, as do field officers who have internet enabled PDAs. Link to ETCorp Newsletter May 08 pdf |
